Careers and Enterprise Education at Testbourne
Careers education lessons are delivered through our PSHCE curriculum (Years 7-11). We explore topics such as; future careers, work and employability skills, finance, money matters, the labour market, further and higher education.

During their time at Testbourne Community School, all students are entitled to:
- Bespoke transition support from primary to secondary school.
- A careers education programme including lessons, workshops, external speakers, work-related learning or taster days.
- Regular feedback on academic progress and how to improve so that goals can be achieved.
- Support to develop better self-awareness to help students recognise their own strengths, areas for development, skills, motivations, and abilities.
- Assistance when accessing and understanding information on open days, jobs, colleges, universities and apprenticeships.
- Signposting to local and borough-wide opportunities such as careers fayres and workshops facilitated by the Basingstoke Consortium.
- Guidance and support when making decisions about KS4 course options.
- Parent information evenings to provide information and guidance to parents and carers at key stages.
- Bespoke support when completing application forms, writing personal statements, CVs etc.
- Personalised career guidance and support from a qualified careers advisor.
- The opportunity to complete a work experience placement in year 10.
Additional examples of CEIAG links at Testbourne Community School:
- Year 8 MFL students completed a ‘languages at work’ project designing publicity material in the target language for a trade fair abroad.
- Year 9 Mathematicians linked up with Queen Mary’s College to take part in the ‘Quirky Maths Club’ sessions.
- ‘Pre-A Level’ remote Maths sessions were available to those considering taking A Level Maths.
- Year 8 National UK Maths Challenge UKMC – 40 students logged on remotely to take part
- Students in Years 7-9 have been improving their numeracy during lockdown with Times Tables Rock Stars
- Students competed in the Teen tech Awards (remotely), Crest awards and AWE challenge days in Science.
- Year 10 Scientists attended a careers event with speeches by scientists to encourage STEM subject uptake. Some students also entered the Shell Bright Ideas Challenge during the COVID-19 lockdown.
- Year 10 ‘Careers in Engineering’ online talk with AECOM
- Visits from industry in multiple subject areas
- Duke of Edinburgh Award including links and visits with a school in Uganda
- Year 9 trip to ‘Women in Digital’ event in March 2018; speakers included female web developers & entrepreneurs, and coders from Microsoft.
- Opportunities to participate in the 'CyberFirst Girls Competition' run by GCHQ during lockdown 2020
- Year 9 students participated in our own Enterprise Project 'First to a Million'
- Formal letter writing, along with information on the recruitment process and interview tips forms part of the Year 11 Business Studies course.
- Student Investor Challenge run by London Institute of Banking and Finance - stocks and shares
- Open schools Software Challenge run by Surrey University - designing an App for a charity
- Vodaphone Digital Creative Challenge run by Vodaphone - 5 Teams had to design an app to create a solution for a community problem.
- Subject-specific career links such as the ‘Careers in Maths’ display board, STEM links in Science and theatre links in Drama.
- Year 11s participate in the National Citizenship Service
- Year 10 Employability Workshop with Basingstoke Consortium
- Year 8 and 10 visit to Winchester University during 2019
- Year 9 drop down careers day in January 2020 with EPB
- Participation in the ‘Get Inspired’ event run by EPB
- Year group assemblies with Testbourne Alumni
